ALPHABET SORT

Alphabet Sort is a simple, fun and engaging hands-on literacy activity children can play to help them learn and recognise letters. Learning the letter sound first and then the letter name are important for reading and writing development.

You will need an easel, white board marker and magnetic letters.

To set up this learning opportunity we divided the easel into parts and labelled as demonstrated in the photo. We also placed the magnetic letters in alphabetical order.

SOME IDEAS:

• Sort the alphabet letters into two groups, letters that have holes in them and letters that do not have holes. We talked about whether there was a hole to peek through or not or poke our finger through.
• As your child places the alphabet letters into groups talk about what sound that letter makes and word that begin with that sound. For example, ‘Aa’ for apple, and ‘Bb’ for ball.
• Sing the alphabet song and point to the letters as you sing them.
• Find the letters in your child’s name and place them in correct order.
• Run your finger over the shapes of the letters.
• Talk about which groups has more letters and count them out loud together.
